Reply:easily Nod32, if not the current best always ranked in the top few which makes it extremely reliable. Also extremely fast. Currently i think it is Avira followed by Nod32. But Nod32 has been reliable for years.
Reply:AVG is probably the best, even the free version is very, very good. Avast! isn't as good, it is more intensive on your computers resources but it is better than Norton or McAfee. Never ever use Norton or McAfee, they drastically slow your computer down and ends up just being really, really annoying.

I have a Canon XH A1 camcorder. It has a 4 pin firewire connector. The manual simply refers me to some $800 software package that Canon sells and I'm not interested in spending that amount of money to digitize the video.
So, what other software can I use to get the video from the camera into a video file on my PC? I have both a mac and a PC, so a package for either one will be fine (although I prefer PC).
Keep in mind that the camcorder outputs 1080i video, so the software needs to support that.

I am trying to learn photography at the moment but still stuggle even with the basics such as lighting %26amp; contrast. Yet when I use an editing program with the shots I have taken they look great.

From my end of it, as a graphic designer, I have to prepare a photographic image for duplication in a form other than a stand alone photograph. My assignments will end up on anything from a flyer to a slick magazine or catalogue. Each kind of media will need the image to duplicate in ways suitable to the process. A photo on newsprint paper, for example, will require a higher contrast and a less subtle gradiation, becuse the paper tends to bleed and soak in some ink from the printing process. Images on coated paper stock will bleed less and can reproduce a lot more subtle effects. Adjustments to things like the size of inkjet dots and sceen resolutions can be made in Photoshop. Images to be reproduced by a photocopy process cannot have, virtually ANY gradations, unless they are prepared with half tone screens.
Many of these adjustment may require extensive manipulations in Photoshop. And this is not to even mention the technical mistakes that I make through the camera lens, like a too busy background, accidental red eye, and, just plain bad exposures. Like "fhotoace" descibes, I'm not a professional "shooter." I depend a LOT on my skills in Photoshop to produce the best results for my clients.
Of COURSE I try to take the best shot I can, on site. The fact that I have ANY success is due to the years of practice, as a casual shooter, and even now, as a pro in the design field. But, as with my darkroom, in the past, digital post camera applications help guarantee a good result.
Reply:ah, the grumpy old shooters haven't gotten here yet... i play around with the editing programs, but for real i think less is more, the less i have to do in the computer the better... learn your camera and composition and all the basics and practice practice practice with the camera, a great shot is a great shot and a bad shot is still a bad shot, no matter how much it is edited...
the less i have to edit a shot the better chance i have of selling it and of people liking it

Then, using my file manager I edit (sort) all the JPEG images . Missed shots (slightly out of focus, wrong part of the image in focus, oe/ue shots and ones with poor composition) go into a junk file folder. The rest are edited into file folders that represent the various subjects photographed during the shoot.
I then do a final edit and choose the 20 or 30 images I am going to present to the client and put them in a special file folder. I reduce the JPEG files to an email size (renaming them with a little "i" in front of the actual file name) and send them to the client.
Once the client chooses the images they want, I then open the corresponding RAW file and convert it to either a high resolution JPEG or TIFF, depending upon their preference. I then burn those to a disk and send them to the client with my bill. All the other images (except the trash) are burned to two backup CD's or DVD's (depending upon the size of the total remaining images). One goes into my library and the other is put in a fire-proof safe offsite.
If I want to make a black and white image from any existing image, I just (again using the RAW file) make a high resolution JPEG image, de-saturate it and use the levels tool to set the black threshold, white threshold and mid-tones to my liking and save it as the same file name, but with BW added on the end if its existing name.
That is just about as much as I ever use Photoshop. All the exposure, composition and backgrounds are handled in the camera. This keeps me out shooting instead of sitting in front of my computer using my digital darkroom to "fix" any mistakes. I (except in rare instances) re-shoot any images that are not up to the specifications of the client or mine.

I am a small business owner, and I am spending about $25,000 this year for custom software development. I've never done this before, and I don't know whether it is better for tax purposes to expense this cost or capitalize it?

How do you transfer pics from a Kodak Easyshare camera without the software?
When I plug in my Easyshare camera, I have to use the Easyshare software (made for people who have never used a computer before). While easy share lets me painfully transfer pictures from the camera, My Computer does not recognize that the device is plugged in and the only other option I see is buying a separate card reader. Is there any way to deactivate the software so that I can just drag and drop from the SD card to my documents in Windows Explorer?

I need a software program or something to organize all my buisness contacts, so I can easily reference them up at a later date. Think longer term if not now may be for brighter tommorow - go for a registered firm.

How to begin writing a software for a beginner?
Hi, I'm a student in college right now. I've familiarized myself with various CS classes such as C and Java and some other more functional languages like Matlab. However, right now I have an idea of a simple program/software that I wanna write for my own use, but I do not know where or how to begin. I can write code, but I am missing the picture of the transition from knowing how to write code to actually writing a simple software that you put on a CD. So I'd appreciate some guidance from the more experienced programmers out there. What is the next step given that I have an idea and I have the ability to code? Do I use something like Visual Basic etc?

Visual Basic .NET is a great beginning langauge to start with. If you have Visual Studio, you can actually create ready-to-install packages to put on a floppy, CD, or on an Internet Download Site.
Also, you'll probably want to find someone who is good at MARKETING to help you sell it. As a general rule, those who can write code well cannot market it well (although, there are a few exceptions...like me. Heh!).

Reply:VB as part of Visual Studio is OK as it has the ability to produce a shipable package i.e.program, install package etc. Java or J++ is good too. Really you need a project. Unless you have an end goal in mind then writing little bits of code is never going to test you.
Reply:First you must have an algorithm. Computers are dumb and you must tell them exactly how to do something. You will need to draw the way the screens will look and give all the fields names. You must then define the relationship between all the fields. When you write a program you will call subroutines that handle the display and input of screens, etc. In my experience the hardest part is design, not programming.

Choosing the right programming language is a matter of personal choosing ... some prefer to use a simple language like visual basic and other like the complexity of C++.

How to begin writing a software for a beginner?
Visual Basic .NET is a great beginning langauge to start with. If you have Visual Studio, you can actually create ready-to-install packages to put on a floppy, CD, or on an Internet Download Site.
Also, you'll probably want to find someone who is good at MARKETING to help you sell it. As a general rule, those who can write code well cannot market it well (although, there are a few exceptions...like me. Heh!).

Reply:VB as part of Visual Studio is OK as it has the ability to produce a shipable package i.e.program, install package etc. Java or J++ is good too. Really you need a project. Unless you have an end goal in mind then writing little bits of code is never going to test you.
Reply:First you must have an algorithm. Computers are dumb and you must tell them exactly how to do something. You will need to draw the way the screens will look and give all the fields names. You must then define the relationship between all the fields. When you write a program you will call subroutines that handle the display and input of screens, etc. In my experience the hardest part is design, not programming.

How to deal with problem of uninstalling or installing software?
Suppose, I have installed some software and without uninstalling it I have deleted it. So now we can see that software in add/remove program but that program doesn't exist. If we want to install that software( or its newer version) it tells to uninstall existing software. But we can't uninstall using add/remove program it asks for some file not found. So how to deal with this problem?

I am taking the verification and the validation class. It teaches me many concepts and guidelines. I am wondering if these are used at all in the real world. If you work in the industry, please tell me how your company goes about planning,testing and validation and other software engineering steps.

My tax software has taken away my child credit for my for my 17 year daughter. Why?
I thought the government considered a child as someone who was under the age of 18. The taxcut software states that a minor had to be under the age of 17 at the end of 2007. That makes no sense to me since she is under the age of 18 in 2008 and here it is April already.

Reply:We used Spectorsoft. I thought it was the most comprehensive package. But what is your real problem? Are you worried what your teen is doing online? Who's talking to them? Try moving the computer into the most used room in your house. That is a lot cheaper than spyware programs on your computer. Try talking to them too.

the software architect is the person who draws up the plans for the new program. The software developer is the person who actually implements the plans ("blueprints") that the architect drew up. They can be, but aren't always the same person.

The $50,000 Boolean Flag
One "heavy client" client/server architecture I helped create had a marketing requirement for "modular" extension of system functionality. Its primary objective was that each module be separately priced and licensed to customers. The business model was that, for each desired option, customers purchase a module for the server that provided the necessary core functionality. Each client would then install a separately licensed plug-in to access this functionality. In this manner, "modules" resided at both the server and client level. One example was the "extended reporting module"—a set of reports, views, and related database extract code that a customer could license for an additional fee. In terms of our pricing schedule, modules were sold as separate line items.
Instead of creating a true "module" on the server, we simply built all of the code into the server and enabled/disabled various "modules" with simple Boolean flags. Product management was happy because the group could "install" and "uninstall" the module in a manner consistent with their goals and objectives for the overall business model. Engineering was happy because building one product with Boolean flags is considerably simpler than building two products and dealing with the issues that would inevitably arise regarding the installation, operation, maintenance, and upgrade of multiple components. Internally, this approach became known as the "$50,000 Boolean flag."
The inverse to this approach can also work quite nicely. In this same system, we sold a client-side COM API that was physically created as a separate DLL. This allowed us to create and distribute bug fixes, updates, and so forth, very easily; instead of upgrading a monolithic client (challenging in Microsoft-based architectures), we could simply distribute a new DLL. Marketing didn't sell the API as a separate component, but instead promoted it as an "integrated" part of the client.

The $50,000 Boolean Flag
One "heavy client" client/server architecture I helped create had a marketing requirement for "modular" extension of system functionality. Its primary objective was that each module be separately priced and licensed to customers. The business model was that, for each desired option, customers purchase a module for the server that provided the necessary core functionality. Each client would then install a separately licensed plug-in to access this functionality. In this manner, "modules" resided at both the server and client level. One example was the "extended reporting module"—a set of reports, views, and related database extract code that a customer could license for an additional fee. In terms of our pricing schedule, modules were sold as separate line items.
Instead of creating a true "module" on the server, we simply built all of the code into the server and enabled/disabled various "modules" with simple Boolean flags. Product management was happy because the group could "install" and "uninstall" the module in a manner consistent with their goals and objectives for the overall business model. Engineering was happy because building one product with Boolean flags is considerably simpler than building two products and dealing with the issues that would inevitably arise regarding the installation, operation, maintenance, and upgrade of multiple components. Internally, this approach became known as the "$50,000 Boolean flag."
The inverse to this approach can also work quite nicely. In this same system, we sold a client-side COM API that was physically created as a separate DLL. This allowed us to create and distribute bug fixes, updates, and so forth, very easily; instead of upgrading a monolithic client (challenging in Microsoft-based architectures), we could simply distribute a new DLL. Marketing didn't sell the API as a separate component, but instead promoted it as an "integrated" part of the client.

You can however get your console 'chipped' to bypass the protection, or there is a gismo available that opens the cd tray without pressing the button (which is when the copy protection is activated)
Either way involes modding your console, with the risk of it going faulty!

there are plenty of hard drive formatting utilitys however even with a windows boot disk and using the "fdisk" command prompt you will never 100% clear all data from a hard drive
this is because when you format the drive you can still recover the files using the correct software
however your best option is to download a windows start up disk such as the windows 98se start-up-disk (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) and use this file to create the floopy boot disk
then using the advanced bios features option in the set up,change the boot order to floopy drive as first boot device,then remember to save and exit set up
the disk will then load and you can then either use the "format" command prompt such as :
format :c %26gt;then press enter
or fdisk %26gt; this will gove you options to delete and create partitions and also mark them as active,you can also check the partition info
after you have created or any changes made to a drive you need to format them and then restart the p.c

Also, you'll want to check with the printshop or publisher what files they'll work with.

What is the easiest to use DVD burner software?
I am fairly good at figuring out the computer, but the whole DVD burning has me stumped. I tried burn4free dvd and it looked pretty complicated to me. I need something that is for a beginner, with simple instructions. I don't know how to figure out speed or anything like that. I looked through some of the resolved questions and I don't want a link to a tutorial. I would like suggestions on user-friendly software (whatever the price). What happens when you download a software (hardware monitoring utilities) on XP %26amp; after running set-up, program starts getting installed %26amp; in the end you get a pop up informing that its not meant for this type of mother board !
My question is that Do any type of software component are left over your operating system in this unsuccessful installation ? If yes, how we can detect them %26amp; remove from the system completely, as they are useless.

Reply:Step by step eh? Well talent, skill and imagination aside I've had to do this more than a few times, and will share what I know of the process in a nutshell. If there are terms here that I use and you need more information on - that's going to be more questions as I intend to be brief. This is a basic description - there are certainly more "advanced" techniques but I'm going to try and get you running "out of the box".
Now, the first thing you need is a story or script. You have to figure out how to start, where to go and how to end. You can't just start drawing a make it up as you go along.
Storyboarding helps at this point, it gives you an idea of how the project will look and how the action will flow from one scene to the next. Often you storyboard something and realize that you have too much focus on one event or you need an event as a "transition". Some people don't bother with storyboarding because it's time consuming but if I can help it, I work a storyboard up.
Preproduction should be drawing the characters - design them and make sure they have the look they need. It's also a good time to develop sets the characters will be in. If your characters are dark you don't want to put them are super dark backgrounds - they will get lost.
Production is the actual drawing. A traditional animation is 30 frames per second. This means if you cartoon is 5 minutes long you'll need 9000 frames of animation. Here's where software can help. You draw one background then draw your character on frame one - hold that drawing for a couple of frames then move them slightly and continue the process. Practice with stick figures and a "flip book" to truly get the feel of this process.
Once you have your thousands of images you feed them through a program like WMM and line them up 1-2-3-4-5-ect. Play the end result to make sure it flows right. If some action is too slow, you drop frames to speed it up or duplicate frames to slow it down a bit. Once you have your finished movie you can then go back and add music and the like.

As for programs. Flash can be used. In college some friends of mine used a program called Director for making videos and claymation. It functions on a frame by frame basis.

There are plenty of softwares like Flash, Director, Image ready, Maya etc for making animations, but you have to learn it first. Cartoon drawing is similarly an art form which either come as in-born talent or you have to learn it first.
Reply:I have spent the last four months reintroducing myself to line art which was something practiced in 80's high. I recommend the best program with simple to use interface, XARA.

You can see there with this program and softward that all kinds of things are achieved. Really, start with this before losing a decade to mastering Illustrator or Corel Draw, though Corel products do compliment XARA.

What software can I use to run a very small travel agency?
I like to sell air tickets and hotel reservations. I use online services like travelocity, airlines webpages and call centers. This tools dont offer me the flexibility to perform changes to reservations or extend the due date of the reservation. So i need an online software that gives me the flexibility to manage this reservations. I have heard of Sabre and Amadeus, but i think they are too expensive for me right now. Any advice?

I don't want to go to college and live a 5-9 job you know. I want power, or at least, I want to have the power to do something great. I'm thinking of starting a software company when I get into college (then would come the impossible challenge of creating something brilliant like MySpace or YouTube or a new P2P program).

When you dont have much budget then dont say major company. Well u can go from small to big. First try to get as much people (prefer friends) which got alot of time in their hands or just got nothing to do and will accept a not so high payment. Then create softwares and try selling them first your college then your town. If people likes then try improving it until ur ready to step out of ur hiding place and go to an office.

Without college, you are toast, except for an extremely few people that had a natural talent for their business (You'd have better chances of winning a lottery than of being the next one of these people)

Go back to school, get your degree and then think about making your own way.

If anything what "brilliance" they have is their branding, logo designs, and financing. YouTube alone burnt through $millions a month of venture seed capital in bandwidth fees without receiving income... before being bought out for $billions and them in turn getting ad revenue. However you don't see MetaCafe or other variants being lauded as brilliant... although they do their job same as YouTube. And similar for MySpace... different variants out there... but MySpace is possibly dominant cause of the "network effect" (first site to gain critical mass of most users using it... brings more people in to that successful network.. a bit like ebay v qxl)

How can I start a major company in software?
When you dont have much budget then dont say major company. Well u can go from small to big. First try to get as much people (prefer friends) which got alot of time in their hands or just got nothing to do and will accept a not so high payment. Then create softwares and try selling them first your college then your town. If people likes then try improving it until ur ready to step out of ur hiding place and go to an office.

Without college, you are toast, except for an extremely few people that had a natural talent for their business (You'd have better chances of winning a lottery than of being the next one of these people)
On top of things, you're not willing to put the preparation into learning enough so that you'd be capable of starting this new company.
Go back to school, get your degree and then think about making your own way.

You don't go into detail about what you mean by "personal data sheet", but you should be able to do it in any word processor or text editor, i.e. MS Word or Windows Notepad. You probably got one of those already.
