What software can i use to detect a virus?

My computer loads normally and then when i want to open any applications from Microsoft word to opening window media player they dont open. I can double click on the application but it starts to runs to open but closes before it has even begun I cant access any applications on my computer. What can i do to solve the problem or what software can i get to get rid of the virus.

Reply:I'm not sure if it is a virus or not, but the program I use is called Antivirus personal edition (antivir). It's by Avira it works great!
