My tax software has taken away my child credit for my for my 17 year daughter. Why?

I thought the government considered a child as someone who was under the age of 18. The taxcut software states that a minor had to be under the age of 17 at the end of 2007. That makes no sense to me since she is under the age of 18 in 2008 and here it is April already.

My tax software has taken away my child credit for my for my 17 year daughter. Why?
Was it the software or the gov't that took the credit away?

My bet is it's the government's fault.
Reply:tax codes have their own rules....

so in this case your daughter no longer qualifies you for the credit becuse she turned 17 in 2007.
Reply:No, the child tax credit goes away as soon as the child turns 17. So if she turned 17 in 2007, then the credit isn't available to you.
Reply:For tax purposes, it is always as of December 31st.
Reply:To be your dependent, you child has to be under 18 (or under 23 and a full time student.)

The child tax credit is for children under 17 at the end of the year.
Reply:You lose the child tax credit the year they turn 17, not 18. You still get to claim her as a dependent and get a 3400 exemption for her.
Reply:The child tax credit is only for children who are *under* 17 at the end of the tax year, not for children who *are* 17 at the end of the year.

Doesn't seem right? Maybe. But that's how the tax regulations are written. (Remember, there didn't used to be any such thing as a child tax credit at all. Having it for 17 years is better than not at all!)
